Week 1 included a detailed briefing on the course, as well as an introduction to the marking scheme and recommended textbooks.
The classes also covered a recap on the material learnt in the Introduction to Oil & Gas Industry & Sustainable Development (PDB1012) course, as it was deeply related to our current course.
The early discovery of large oil accumulation was discussed, as well as the present theories on the origin of petroleum.
As for the extraction of sub-surface oil, one of the first large accumulations of oil was found by Edwin Blake in 1859 in Pennsylvania.

When it comes to the discussion of the origin of oil, there are two famous theories. The first one is the Abiogenic one, which proposes that oil and natural as where formed by inorganic means, such as deep carbon deposits. By now, however, there is strong evidence that the second theory is the correct one.
The second theory is that oil and gas originated from the decomposition of remains of organisms (like phytoplankton and zooplankton) under conditions of great pressure and temperature.
